Holiday Overview:
We will be staying at an agriturismo in an olive grove not far from Matera, the small hill-top town of Miglionico is a short distance away. The surrounding landscape is varied, unspoilt and inspirational.
The Painting Course, led by Penny Balding, which runs parallel to the stone carving course in the second week, will cover varying aspects of drawing and painting. There will be an emphasis on responding directly to the environment with sustained working time on trips out. Boards and other basic materials are provided but you will need to bring your own paints, brushes etc.
The Stone Carving Course led by sculptor Sarah Moore will suit both beginners and the more proficient. Local stone will be used and there will be visits to local carvers. There will be the opportunity to visit unusual places to gather valuable resource material along with the painters. Stone carving tools will be provided.
Basilicata:
Previously known as Lucania, is a relatively unknown area in Southern Italy between Puglia and Calabria. It has space, variety of landscape, and quality of light which is inspirational, and is steeped in history and full of surprises. These include the Saracen hilltop towns of Castelmezzano and Pietropertosa in the lucanian dolomites; the ‘Sassi’ at Matera, a unique and unforgettable area of cave-houses, now a Unesco site, with Byzantine frescoes and underground churches; or the deserted town of Craco. All this, along with a constantly changing landscape, makes the Basilicata region rich in resources for artists and explorers alike.
Includes:
Tuition, en-suite accommodation, full board with local wine, air-conditioned transport for all trips in Italy including collection from Bari airport.
Non-artists are welcomed: Find out more...
Alternative programme, for non-painters, partners and friends; provides a good opportunity for additional exploration as well as visits to not-to-be-missed places of interest.
