Basilicata
Dates: A: 28th May - 9th June 2009
B: 25th Aug - 3rd Sep 2009
Holiday Overview:
A relatively unknown area in southern Italy, between Puglia and Calabria has space, variety of landscape, and quality of light which is inspirational.
Previously known as Lucania, it is steeped in history and full of surprises. These include the Roman and pre-Roman archaeological remains at Venosa; the Saracen hill top towns of Castelmzzano and Pietropetosa with lucanian dolomites: the 'Sassi' and "Chiesa Rupestri" at Matera, a unique and unforgetable area of cave-houses, now a Unesco site, with Byzantine frescoes and underground churches; and the Etruscan finds at Melfi; or the deserted town of Craco.
All this, along with a constantly changing landscape, makes the Basilicata region rich in resources for artists and explorers alike.
The various places we have chosen to stay, visit and work gives ample scope for artists to gather valuable resource material, or for those new to working in the landscape, a chance to try out new and interesting ways of responding to the surroundings.
Non-artists are welcomed: Find out more...
Full alternative programme, for non-painters, partners and friends; provides a good opportunity for additional exploration as well as visits to not-to-be-missed places of interest.
